Social competence training (6-12 year olds)

Social competence training (6-12 year olds)

Are you a lion, tortoise or peacock? Looking at animal behaviour to learn social skills.

Children who would benefit from the social competence training:
  • A shy boy, a boy who is being bullied.
  • A girl who withdraws during playtime at school.
  • A girl who quarrels a lot and finds a difficult to deal with her own anger.
These children could have a negative self-image.

In 6-8 group sessions children learn new and effective skills which will help them to deal with difficult situations. This also prevents the development of problem behaviour.

During the social competence training we play and practise with role-plays. We compare the shy behaviour of a turtle, the fierce behaviour of a lion and proud behaviour of a peacock with the preferred behaviour of the child. A child who is shy, like a turtle, learns to stand up for himself. In the role-plays we practise with, for example, saying ‘no’ to another child who wants to snatch something from him or her. The children who are inclined to be angry like a lion, gets to learn skills which helps him/her to stand calm, proud and strong like a peacock.

We offer a training for children aged 6-12 years. We aim to improve social skills, strengthen their self-image, impulse control and independence. Parents and teachers can also get involved during the training.

The Social competence training is aimed at boys and girls aged 6-12 years, who can use a bit of help in social situations.
